Re: Invisible Children and Kony 2012 scam
I didn’t want to use twitter and have to spend like eight tweets replying, so I’m going to put my points here.
Reading over your link http://t.co/XGjP6WjF . IC doesn’t claim he’s still in Uganda - he IS on the run. They want to catch him and bring him to court. They do spend plenty of time talking about this in the video - he’s moved out of Uganda and into three other countries. Despite the claims that he can’t do anything in hiding, that’s patently false. Just look at what Bin Laden did from hiding for the last twenty years.
The money stuff all makes perfect sense to me, they do have a headquarters, I see no problem in paying their volunteers for their time and effort like pretty much all other charities like this do. If they didn’t pay their volunteers, they wouldn’t be able to do the work they’re doing. They also have to furnish their office, furniture, computers etc are all an expected expense. Cameras are vital to the work they’re doing, and good quality cameras are in the thousands. If you look at any non profit, it’ll be run pretty much the same way. And despite this guy complaining that they aren’t spending their money on the right things, I see no problem with furnishing themselves with the equipment they need to do the best they can.
Re: bigger problems facing Africa, YES, there are huge problems in Africa, the entire continent is a mess. But you have to pick a place to start from or nothing gets done. They’ve done this.
In conclusion, I think that article was written by an incredibly pessemistic person with little to no knowledge on how long standing non profits run, who was so interested in rushing to conclusions that he went out and found a few bullet points to support his claims. He very clearly didn’t actually pay attention to the video, or he wouldn’t be complaining about some of the things he is.
I’m not saying it’s impossible for IC to be a scam, I’m just saying you have to look at it without rushing to the assumption that it is, and that’s what he seemed to do.
